Early life

Hoegeng was born Hoegeng Iman Santoso in Pekalongan on 14 October 1921 and changed to Hoegeng later. The name Hoegeng was taken from "bugel" (to "bugeng" and "hugeng" later; which means fat) due to his fat body. His father was Soekarjo Kario Hatmodjo from Tegal, a prosecutor in Pekalongan and his mother was Oemi Kalsoem from Pemalang.[1]

He graduated from HIS Pekalongan in 1934 and continued to MULO Pekalongan. In 1937, after graduating from MULO, he continued to AMS Yogyakarta. In AMS, he met notable persons in Indonesia history, such as Burhanuddin Harahap, Usmar Ismail and Rosihan Anwar. In 1940, he continued his study to RHS in Batavia. In RHS, he joined a student organizations called USI (Unitas Studiosorum Indonesiensis).[2] In April 1942, he returned home because RHS was closed by Japanese. He sold eggs and Japanese language books with his friend to Pati and Semarang.[3]

Since childhood, he wanted to be a policeman. His role model was Ating Natadikusumah, a policeman who was his father's friend.[4]

Career

When he was inactive as the police, he performed on TVRI together with The Hawaiian Seniors band. Sometimes he also performed with his wife, Merry Hoegeng and his daughter, Reny Hoegeng.[5]
